📍 Timbuctoo Historic Site
ghost town · Smartsville · est. 1850 · no longer standing
Once a thriving Gold Rush town of 1,200 residents at the center of the hydraulic mining industry, Timbuctoo is now a ghost town east of Smartsville. The ruins of the Stewart Brothers store — a substantial brick building — are the most visible remnant. The town collapsed after the 1884 Sawyer Decision banned hydraulic mining debris discharge.
