The smallest mountain range in the world, rising nearly 2,000 feet above the Sacramento Valley floor. Sacred to the Nisenan people as Histum Yani ("Spirit Mountain"), the Buttes are a volcanic remnant approximately 1.6 million years old. A portion was acquired by California State Parks in 2003. Access is limited but improving through collaborative agreements with tribal and private landowners.
